Celebrity-branded headphones have revolutionized the headphone industry in recent years. What used to be for simply listening, Dr. Dre and other celebrities have created brands that made headphones a fashion accessory. In order to stay competitive with these fast growing brands, many companies have followed suit and found their own celebrity endorsements.
Yamaha’s “Dr. Who?” ads, taking a lighthearted jab at Dr. Dre’s Beats headphone line, have apparently angered the rap legend turned headphone-mogul enough to file a lawsuit against them. Beats claims that it has revolutionized the headphone as a fashion accessory and that Yamaha is benefiting from the goodwill of the Beats’products. Also citing patent infringement in the suit, it seems that Beats is becoming the Apple of the headphone industry.
Taking a look at the side-by-side comparison of the two headphones, Beats may have a case.
Regardless, I am sure we can look forward to a drawn out and expensive lawsuit that will set a precedent for many brands to come.
